January 30, 2007 - 9:55AM

South African mobile operator MTN has signed a $388-million memorandum of understanding with Ericsson to expand network operations across Africa and the Middle East.

The focus of the agreement is on infrastructure expansion, network rollout, upgrading of base stations and the introduction of new technologies into the region.

The MTN group operates in Botswana, Cameroon, Cote d'Ivoire, Nigeria, Republic of Congo (Congo Brazzaville), Rwanda, South Africa, Swaziland, Uganda and Zambia.

The acquisition of Investcom added Afghanistan, Benin, Cyprus, Ghana, Guinea Bissau, Guinea Republic, Liberia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen to the company's portfolio.

Ericsson's involvement in Africa and the Middle East spans the full spectrum of telecoms, from infrastructure to value-added services. Ericsson has agreements with more than 50 mobile and over 20 fixed-operators in sub-Saharan Africa.
